Squares

Problems may involve area, perimeter, or diagonals.  The square is similar to the rectangle.  The square is a special case of the rectangle where the length and width are equal.  Rather than use the words length or width, we will refer to the length of each side of the square as the Side, S.
·      Area - Applications may include words involving the quantity of carpeting required for a room or some other word related to area.
·      Use the square area formula:  Area = Side or graphic

·      Perimeter - Applications may include words involving the quantity of fencing required to enclose an area or some other word related to the perimeter.
·      Use the rectangle perimeter formula:  Perimeter = 4S

·      Diagonal problems use the Pythagorean theorem graphic ·       .  For a square, this reduces to graphic ·     where D id the length of the diagonal of the square with a side S.
